The lithium coin battery in AirTag has enough power to provide all the essential functions to track your items but it’s not rechargeable. That’s something I only learned last week when I received a notification saying my battery was dying. Fortunately, the method to replace the Apple AirTag battery if you’ve already set up the accessory is simple and a quick trip to the local drugstore or supermarket is all it takes to find the replaceable battery.
How to replace Apple AirTag battery?
Firstly, there’s no direct way to find how much life is left in an AirTag battery. However, your iPhone or other Apple device that is running the Find My app will do both, display the Low Battery status inside the app, and send a message regarding the same on the device that is in use. If no battery indicator is visible then, it is safe to assume that the time to replace the Apple AirTag battery has not yet come.
Hold the AirTag in your hand with Apple logo facing you.
Use two fingers to press down the two points beside the logo and rotate it counter-clockwise until it stops. Lift your fingers to release the metal back. The battery cover should pop out.
Remove the battery and then, insert the new one you recently purchased. Make sure it has the positive side facing up and properly fitted into the device. Line up the 3 marks with the 3 slots on AirTags.
Grab the rear cover and place it back on the AirTag. Press down the metal back and twist clockwise until you feel resistance and it doesn’t fall off.
You should hear a little chirp when it’s ready to use. So, you see, changing AirTags battery is mainly a 3-step process: Remove, Replace and Attach!
What is the use of Apple AirTags?
Apple AirTag is a tracking accessory that finds applications in locating misplaced or stolen items via the Find My app. It is deeply integrated with the iOS ecosystem.
Are Apple AirTags waterproof?
The coin-shaped tag has an IP67 grade. If you are not aware, the first number after IP indicates the protection against solid objects like dust and sand. This number varies between 0 and 6. ‘0’ denotes no protection against dust and sand while 6 means 100% protection. Similarly, the second number after IP denotes protection against liquid damage. Here again, the number ranges from 0 to 8. So, a number 7 for AirTags denotes a high degree of protection against water (at least 30 minutes while under 15cm to 1m of water).
What batteries do AirTags use?
The tracking accessory from Apple (AirTags) uses coin-shaped CR2032 Lithium ion 3V batteries. These batteries are suitable for use in keyfobs, wearables and most of the sports devices.
We recommend you buy Duracell Lithium Coin 2032 batteries (3V) since they are built to last long. In addition, its Tamper-proof pack with a double blister makes it impossible for a child to tear its covering without scissors. Some even have child-secure packaging with a bitter coating to discourage swallowing but these units may not be compatible with AirTags.
Do you have to charge AirTags?
No! There is no way to charge an Apple AirTag since puck-shaped tracker batteries have to be replaced with CR2032 batteries.
How long does Apple AirTag battery last?
Normally, an AirTag battery life should last for 1 year. However, it depends on your usage. As mentioned earlier, the battery is replaceable with another CR2032 lithium coin battery.
Hope that makes sense!
